Merapi Volcano Museum



Merapi Volcano Museum is a new tourist vehicle that was built in the area of the southern slope of Merapi present to answer it. Sightseeing-designed as a vehicle for sustainable conservation education and development of disaster science volcanoes, earthquakes and other natural disasters was unveiled on October 1, 2009 by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (EMR), Purnomo Yusgiantoro.

The museum which has the slogan “Earth Window Merapi”, occupy a land area of 3.4 hectares with a building area of 4470 square meters and consists of two floors. The first floor contains a collection of museum objects are divided into rooms with themes Volcano World, On The Merapi Volcano Trail, Man and the Mountain of Fire, Earthquake and Tsunami, Disaster Movement of Soil, Diorama, Survey Tools, Extra-terrestrial Volcano, and other supporting facilities. While the second floor is used as a screening buildings on Mount Merapi also short description of National Figure who visit the victim of eruption from other to another time.

At the west hall, there is a information about some big volcano eruptions in the world. One of them was Krakatau Eruption in 1883 which killed thousands, caused 40 meters tsunami and darken the sky at Asia, US and Europe for 3 days. Another beautiful images of the eruption comes from Chile, US, Italy, Philippines and Hawaii. It is so scary to see dark poisoned hot cloud and lighting inside. But do not be afraid, there is a simple way to watch out when the eruption will come; you will see animal mountain down from the mountain quickly. Someday if you see tens of deer run fast down from the mountain, please don't be a hero climbing the mountain.

Some myths are also be a part of the collection, they are Nyai Gandung Melati and Kyai Sapu Jagat, spirit ancestors who guard the mountain.

The most interesting area is in the middle of the museum, a replica of eruption aftermath is under construction now. Yet we cannot enter the area, but we can see some interesting things there such as some burnt woods, lava dust, volcano rocks and a little hill, just like pass away in the middle of natural disaster, of course on a safety site.
